Runways need upkeep to ensure they’re safe. Runways in remote locations and extreme environments even more so. Unfortunately, the more remote the location and extreme the environment, the less likely it is that standard maintenance operations can take place. Our client, based in Africa, tasked us with finding a solution to their unique problem. Their runway was unusable and in reality, required a full rebuild for jet operations. But, due to a shortage of aggregate, an alternative solution had to be found. We located a bitumen binder that would overcome the aggregate issue and immediately put a team of experts together. Sourcing a product and effectively applying it are two different things. We knew the clients’ remote location and the extreme heat needed serious consideration and would need people on board who understood both issues. We found our experts in Australia. With years of experience laying bitumen in very similar conditions and under similar circumstances, we flew the team over to Africa where they rolled out various tests to ensure the solution was fit for purpose. Combine vehicles, equipment and personnel, all originating in different countries and a requirement for everything to arrive in one place at the same time and you know you’re going to need exceptional project management. In 2011 that’s exactly what we did. Our client needed 14 armoured vehicles to be transported into the Middle East from North America for a training exercise. They also needed to transport specific equipment from Europe and personnel from the Levant, making sure that everything and everyone arrived at the right place at the right time. By leveraging our own fleet and chartering aircraft to coordinate regional and intercontinental movement, we got everything where it needed to be and took care of everyone seamlessly. This included temporary secure storage of the vehicles between charter flights, as well as variety of landing, overflight as well as ramp access to ensure the safety of the cargo.
